I feel that they should have just made a brand-new game and tried to be braver and bolder with the game design and they could have had something special here. It is far from a bad game it is just a very average and dare I say “lazy” game. I would have to say that I agree with all of those that say Dune 2000 was a disappointing experience. My father and I were huge Dune fans when I was a kid and the most fun I had with this was the multiplayer. Some are very unbalanced and once you figure out which units can steamroll the enemies, you never feel the need to change up your tactics. The game has many different unites and you can play as all three houses, but apart from having different looking units, they all feel and play the same. However, it does make it feel like an “older” game than it really is. What we have here is a game that plays very similar to the game that was released the better part of a decade earlier! That does not make this a bad game as Dune 2 was fun. I feel that the late 90s were a pivotal time in RTS games with many games making great strides in the genre. This is a real time strategy game, but it is one that plays it very, very safe. They did a fantastic job in this regard and the sound is very fitting for this desertplanet.Ī huge reason why many people feel that Dune 2000 was a bit of a letdown was the core gameplay.

One area that I do really like is the sound design. However, everything else in the game really shows that they took Dune 2 and did very little to make it look like other comparable games of its day. I do like how they tried their best to give the many different dessert-themed maps a bit more personality. Okay, that may be a tad harsh, but this is a game that is certainly very basic in terms of the way it looks. Trying To Shop At Forever 21Įven at the time, the game was released this was seen as a rather ugly looking game. If you love the Dune franchise you may get a tad more out of it. When Dune 2000 was released it was the late 90s and RTS games had started to get a bit of a cinematic flair to them and this game is sorely lacking in that regard. It is just so lackluster in its presentation that it is hard to get excited by. I am not saying this story is bad or anything like that. The House that prevails will be handed Dune and with that all the Spice they can handle, Spice being the most valuable commodity in the universe! We have House Atreides, House Ordos, and House Harkonnen who have been challenged to prove who is the best. It's worth your time. The game does have a story and if you have already played Dune 2 you will know what you are getting into. Don't let yourself be tricked by their weak attacking forces, because their defenses are much more strong. All in all, for those who love old school RTS I say give this game a try. The AI proves to be challenging in the game which is a good thing. I don't know if you can kill these creatures or not, but I can tell you that I have tried very hard to kill them. These creatures can swallow up your units, mostly your harvesters, so you should keep an eye on these creatures. You gotta be careful though of the sand worms. During gameplay, you can build structures, train units and move units just like in Red Alert 2. The plot is pretty much the same: you play as one of three houses, conquering territories and battle with the other 2 houses to gain total dominance of the planet.

Other than that, the game is fun to play if you get past these flaws. Another annoying aspect is that you cannot train more than one unit at a time and cannot even assign rally points for the military structures. You can however create buildings without placing concrete, but your buildings will be built with 1/2 HP. Firstly, when it come to building structures, you must build concrete in order to construct new buildings. The only thing that was changed is the gameplay, which in my opinion is very similar to Red Alert 2, but a bit inferior. The plot is the same and the houses you play ar the same as before. The plot was interesting and made you push on, knowing that the reward was total control of the planet.

The first Dune game was the very RTS game that I have ever played. When it comes to Dune, the first thing that pops in my mind is a far away planet covered entirely in vast deserts and sand worms.
